There was a huge windstorm that ripped through the Pacific Northwest last night. The winds were so fast and loud that they woke me up a few times last night. I really had a hard time sleeping. Plus, the power kept going off and on and every time that happened, Maggie got startled by the indicators in our fire alarm and started barking. Suffice to say I didn’t get a lot of sleep.
The power went off about 4:30 am and stayed off until now, about 2:30 pm, meaning it was off for about 10 hours. Our house is definitely cold. This also made me realize how unprepared we are in our home for an emergency. I realized that we didn’t have many non-perishables to eat outside of breakfast and granola bars. Luckily there are other areas of town that did have power so we had organic bison burgers for lunch by take out. Still, I need to get some soups or something like that for these types of instances. We do have an outdoor charcoal and a propane grill that we can use when the power’s out. We just need to have food that we can use with that.
Tempest was at the vet all day yesterday after he vomited all morning. The vet didn’t find anything outwardly wrong. His liver and kidney values are slightly elevated, which is common when an animal vomits a lot. He also has elevated white blood cells, which indicates inflammation or an infection. So he was given an antibiotic shot and sent home with anti-nausea medications. We are going to do bloodwork again in a month to make sure that everything is back to normal. I am glad that he is doing better but it is frustrating not to have answers.
In other news, Patrick accidentally bit me last night when I was giving him his evening medications. I am starting on antibiotics for it tonight as it was a pretty deep bite to my thumb. I saw the doctor virtually this morning over my phone. This is the second time this has happened. It is frustrating, and scary, but it’s not his fault. He moves his head and mouth around when I give him his medicine and if I’m not careful it’s easy to get a finger or hand caught in his teeth in the process. Last night I was tired and he was in a dark corner of the room when he bit me (or shall I say, I got my hand caught between his teeth while he was shaking around). I should have brought him to a better area of the house to give him his meds.
On top of all of this, Maggie did not want to walk yesterday. She kept looking up at the sky and getting scared, and wanted to stay indoors. I guess she sensed that a windstorm was coming.
Despite all of this I am getting by okay. Since I didn’t sleep well last night I’ve been taking naps throughout the day. Once it warms up in our house I might do some gentle yoga.
